Few Guinness Records You Can Try At Home

They say getting your name into the Guinness Book of World Records is a feeling unlike any other so last weekend I decided to give it a shot. I knew that it wouldn’t be easy but I wasn’t expecting it to be this difficult. I’m just sharing some of the attempts I made at home and if you feel that any of these are doable, just give it a shot.

What I tried first was the most tennis balls held in one hand record. The record is for 18 balls held in one hand for ten seconds. I managed to hold about ten balls for about 20 seconds but couldn’t hold anymore. Next I thought of balancing on one foot record but to do that I’d have to balance for more than 76 hours and 40 minutes. 76 hours? I can’t even sleep for 76 hours let alone stand on one leg. For your information these are only based on the record book I have at home, it could be possible that these records have been beaten many times over and you might have to do a lot better.

If you like jokes, you could try your hand at stand up comedy for getting your name into the record books. One guy from the US holds the record for telling 12,682 jokes in 24 hours-that’s a lot of jokes and I don’t think I’ll be laughing after a couple of hours. I love kids’ games and I thought maybe I could do something in that segment but as it turns out there are a lot more adults with nothing better to do than me! The longest record for pushing an orange with your nose is for a mile! Impossible? Better believe it!

If you thought not breathing for sixty seconds was a feat in itself, then you should know that the Guinness record for holding in your breath the longest is 13 minutes and 42 seconds. Early Bird Kids Smarter In School

Do your kids go to bed on time or do you give in to their cute excuses? If you want your kids to do well at school you fix them a regular bedtime and make sure they get up early; that’s what a new study is telling. Researchers have found out that kids who had regular bedtime were able to perform better at languages, mathematics and even reading as compared to those who did not keep a schedule.

The study was conducted by a Californian research institute and as it turns out, the earlier your child goes to bed, the better they will be in school. Doesn’t mean you have to send them off to bed by 7, just having a schedule and making them follow it would do. The study was completed after comparing more than 8000 children aged four and had less than recommended 11 hours of sleep a day.

The research has concluded that regular bedtime is one of the most important factors that help the positive development of the child as he grows up. It was also reported that children whose bedtimes started past 9PM also had difficulty getting sleep through the night.

So there you have it folks, your child needs sleep just as much as nutrition. It might not be easy if you are a working mom, but you’ve got to try. No matter how feisty they are, get them into bed and make sure they stay there. You can try bed time stories, reading them books, warm milk or even singing. My personal favourite is bed time stories as they are easy to make up and my little girl falls asleep right in the middle of a story. Try any of these and I’m sure your kid will do better in school than ever before.  Have a great weekend everyone :-)

Sweets Can Make You Stupid

Are you a sweet tooth? Then it might be time to cut down on sweets a bit. A new rat study has revealed that consuming too many sweets can make you stupid. Well, not stupid in the truest sense, but it seems taking in too many sweets considerably reduces your brain performance slowing down the thought process, hampering memory and learning. I’ve never taken any rat study seriously, but this one got me thinking. Mostly because I gulp down anything and everything sweet within my arms reach.

If you love sweets, don’t despair, all is not lost. Eating omega-3 fatty acids with your meals can negate the effect of sweets and keep your brain sharp. Omega-3 fatty acids are contained in walnuts, salmons, shrimp, tuna, soyabeans and so on. But you can never be too sure of these studies. One day they tell us omega-3 is all good and after a couple of months they will find out something wrong with it. The study has revealed that the sweet fruits are not the ones to look out for. In fact, sweet fruits have more anti-oxidants that keep the body clean and healthy. It is the unhealthy artificial sweeteners such as corn syrup that you have to cut down on.

In case you are wondering how this study was conducted, experimental rats were given special diet for two to five days and then their behaviour with respect to getting out of mazes was monitored. As opposed to rats which had omega-3 fatty acids in their diets, the sweet tooth rats were slower and found it much harder to find their way out of the maze.

If you are thinking this doesn’t concern me, I suggest you take a look at your diet a bit closer. Common soft drinks are known to contain inexpensive corn syrup which has one of the largest counts of fructose contained in sweets. If you are someone who cannot cut down on sweets I suggest you take a look at the ingredients and make sure to avoid at least food with too much corn syrup.

So Much For A Hot UK Summer

I do not understand the UK weather. Just when I was starting to enjoy the summer, it starts to rain and its no normal rain, it’s a torrential downpour. In fact, The Met Office yesterday has issued 14 flood warning alerts for North, North-East and Wales. It is reported that forecasters estimate about three inches of rain could fall in some areas accompanied by storms later in the week.

This Sunday about 600 residents from Pennal have been evacuated as a local reservoir developed a leak after a landslide in the surrounding area. Even though the crack is small and at present only minimal amount of water is escaping the reservoir, it could get worse once the storm hits. Britain has seen one of the wettest weekends in recent times with floods causing transportation woes in all sectors. Business of every kind has suffered and it is estimated that damage presently stands at at tens of millions of pounds. If rain gods don’t relent, the numbers will just go beyond scales.

Most families enjoying their mid-summer break were caught off guard with the downpour and many including me have been forced to cancel travel plans. Amidst the reports of even more rains coming down, there are fears that major sporting events including Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the Henley Rowing regatta would be washed out. Wonder what would become of these events to which millions of fans were looking forward to.

When they said, this summer is going to be hot, didn’t see this one coming did you? As for me, my summer plans have gone down the drain but that’s not going to stop me from enjoying my summer. I’m gonna bring some friends over, have some hot chocolate, eat lots of junk food and play some online bingo. Can’t think of anything else to do till the weather clears out and hope it does get better by this weekend.
