Friday, September 28th, 2012

Is it Necessary to Use Scented ProductsWe are living in an absolute artificial world, where in nature have lost its importance. From the time we get up in the morning, till we sleep late in the night the amount of unhealthy air we inhale is truly threatening for our bodies. We are exposed to so much of pollutants everyday and same has caused a toll of our health. And, topping this are the artificial fragrance products we use like perfumes, room fresheners and sprays. These days, every bit of our surroundings seems to be perfumed. We live in a miasma of scent- car scents, air fresheners, scented candles, scented cosmetics, loo rolls and a lot more things used in our daily lives are available in multitude of scented fragrances. Feeling the good aroma of these fragrances, we feel so delighted, but do you have an idea what impact it is paying on our health.

According to recent studies, majority of the people use air fresheners in their homes to make it smell good. And, due to this a health of a lot many people suffer for being exposed to these fragrances. It causes allergies, asthma, migraine, nausea and also interferes in your sexual desire. The major problem of scents is contact allergy. That is when perfumes and scented products trigger skin problems.

Any idea, what these lovely fragrances are made up of?

Fragrances in perfumes are a combination of chemicals that gives each perfume a distinctive scent. The fragrance in scents is produced by chemical synthesis, from petroleum or from raw materials. Along with the scented chemicals, perfumes and colognes also contain stabilizers, sunscreen chemicals, preservatives, dyes and solvents. Fragranced candles also trigger an allergy of parfum that causes allergic reactions as told by cosmetic dermatologist. The chemicals present in them like Phthalates, Acrylamine, Ethylene and Formaldehyde can cause allergic reactions that can be itchy, scaly and painful. Furthermore, the chemicals can even affect the lungs and brains.

First reactions are:

Skin- rashes, eczema, flushing, allergic dermatitis

Eyes- Irritation and burning red eyes

Nose- Sinus congestion, nose block, head ache, wheezing, throat irritation, dizziness and breathlessness

Later, it can even lead to problems related to your body like joint pains, muscle pain and irritability. Most of the fragrance chemicals are toxic and have cancer producing hormones that could lead to serious problems. Around 5,000 different types of chemicals are used in the manufacture of fragrance products. And, a single product may create around 600 different chemical ingredients. Being infected with a type of allergy can sensitize the person to the other chemicals available in the environment and that could lead to other allergies.

How to fix it

The way our bodies respond to particular fragrances depends upon our individual physiological make-up. People who can smell things at lower levels compared to others are based on the internal geometry of our nose. Also, the olfactory receptors can differ significantly from person to person. The best thing is to do a bit of research in regards to the reason of your sensitivity and keep away from it.

Few Tips

  • Try using unscented and fragrance free creams, lotion, shampoos and other cosmetics. There are a lot of herbal products available that are free from fragrances.
  • Else, you can concentrate on one kind of a fragrance and stick to it for all products. The one that you are comfortable with.
  • Instead of room fresheners, keep your home clean and you can put some indoor plants and that can even help you with oxygen.
  • Increase public awareness of the threats of these scented perfumes to the society. Endorsements by public figures pay a greater impact on the public.

Therefore, go on to live a fragrance free life and also influence the people around you with the same thought. When, you have a choice to go without it, then why not!

And, that is why people concentrate more on fruits and vegetables, now even chocolate can be added to the list. Chocolates contain the same level of anti-oxidants as found in soybeans, oranges, berries, grapes, green tea and red wine.

Deep dark chocolates have more advantages than their paler counterparts. They are also known as unprocessed chocolate.
